Hockey, websites, work…

Filed under: hockey, work, website — sommera @ 3:05 pm

This past weekend I had two hockey games, one on Saturday against the U of M, and another on Sunday against the Ravens. We won the Saturday game 9-0 and I scored one goal. We lost the Sunday game 2-5. It was a chaotic game and we made some sloppy mistakes, but mostly I think we were ust tired from the day before.

Today I spent a fair amount of time updating both my personal site and my other site, which is a bit more professional. I like knowing that if somebody looks me up online they will find something that I took the time to carefully create and put out there, not just something random.

As we get near the Thanksgiving break I am thinking more and more about my January Term course. I am really looking forward to teaching at the college level. It should be a very different experiance from teaching Chinese at Senlinhu. I am having a blast going over my materials and making lesson plans. I still need have much to do, but I think I have a good pace going.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!!

Hockey update

This sunday my team, the Arrows, had our first normal season game. It was an away game against the Ice Breakers, and we tied 3-3. Last season we beat them both times, so it was pretty disapointing that we tied them this weekend. But we did play really well on offense, it was mostly defenisve break-downs that cost us those 3 goals. Personally I had a fairly good game, I got a goal from a shot from the point, and I ended the game +1 overall. I really hope I can continue to score this season, even though I play defense I feel like I get a lot of opportunities. Hopefully we will fare better next weekend when we play the Ravens. (FYI: I have started posting scores for this season in the hockey section of my site as well)

Busy weekend

Filed under: Uncategorized — sommera @ 4:43 pm

Ethan and I have a busy weekend ahead of us. Tonight we’re meeting with friends from our Patrick’s Trivia Night team to spend some of the loot we’ve won over the past few months. We are currently in second place behing the Endless Enigma, I believe.

On Saturday I am heading to the cities to attend an information session about The U. of MN’s “college of continuing education” to try and figure out what I’m going to do with these courses I’m taking. I want to do something that will help me in my current career path (such as get a masters or certificate of advanced study in a foreign language) without disrupting my actual JOB at GAC. We shall see what happens.

While I’m at my info session, Ethan and his co-sys-admin/friend Dan will be attending an Asterisk User’s Group thing. It is something realted to voice-over-IP phones, but beyond that I don’t know a lot. But they might be presenting on what they are doing here at GAC with VOIP.

On Sunday I have a hockey game up in Blaine. It is the first “real” one of the season. Should be fun, although I hope we have 4 defensemen this time, last time was a bit tiring. But still fun. Wish us luck! Wish me a good plus/minus!

So that’s about it, plus I should 学习中文 (study Chinese) some too. Oh, I put up my pictures and videos from China on my website. Check ‘em out! And have a good weekend!

First Post

Welcome to my new blog. I decided to start this blog as a place to keep track of the bigger, more important things going on in my life. I have a LiveJournal, but it often gets filled up with trivial things, spur of the moment rants, and silly memes. This blog will be for more thought-out, and generally more important stuff.

So, what is going on in my life right now? Since I graduated in 2005 I have been working as the Director of the Culpeper Language Center at Gustavus Adolphus College. The job is basically to develope and maintain the language center and provide technical support to the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. It is a pretty interesting job, and I really like working in an academic setting and being exposed to so may languages and cultures. I am also teaching a January term course at Gustavus this year: MLC 101 - Intro Chinese. It’s mainly a language course, but we will be exploring Chinese culture as well through activities, movies and our language exercises. I am really excited for the class.

Let’s see, what else? Ethan and I are still happily married (one year, 4 months!). It’s been about a year since we moved into our house in St. Peter. We have done a fwe things to the house since we moved: painted the dining room, stairwell and 2nd floor hallway, took down two tree/bush things from out front, and totally re-did the bathroom. We really like our house, and there are a lot of advantages to living in St. Peter, like living less than a mile from work. We still do go up to the cities on a regular basis though.

Speaking of going up to the cities, I am also still playing hockey. I am on a WHAM B2 team in the Twin Cities called the Arrows. This will be my second season with the team. It is a great group and I have a lot of fun playing with them. Between hockey and class I drive up to Minneapolis at 3 times a week now a days. But it’s worth it.

In the future I’ll keep posts shorter (and never try to add links again, what a pain!), and add more about what Ethan is up to (he’s not here right now, so I don’t want to say much, other than that he’s doing well). I hope this helps keep people outside of the LJ world up to date on what is going on in the lives of the St. Peter Sommers. Take care!
